WE L85 Open Bolt Gas Blow Back

In the 1980's, the British Army was developing a replacement for the venerable 7.62mm L1 SLR. From this project the SA80 line of weapons were produced.

The original SA80 weapons (both the L85A1 and L86A1) were plagued with many problems, which were reported by troops on the front line. In 1997, the rifle was finally redesigned by the German company H&K resulting in the L85A2. Problems present with the real steel L85 (also present in the A2) are back heavy weight distribution, rearward placement of the fire selector and right hand operation only.

Despite this, the rifle is regarded as a very reliable and extremely accurate platform, especially when used with the standard issue SUSAT rifle sights.
